Wolf loosens position on recreational pot, but isn’t committing to anything

(Harrisburg) — Governor Tom Wolf appears to be easing his stance on recreational marijuana–and not everyone is happy about it.
Wolf brought up marijuana in a q-and-a with constituents on Twitter–telling one person he thinks it’s time to take a “take a serious and honest look at” at the possibility of legalizing it.
The response from Senate GOP Leader Jake Corman was quick. A spokeswoman issued a statement that night calling Wolf’s position reckless, irresponsible, and potentially catastrophic.
Wolf had previously been firmly against legalization. Asked why his position has changed, he said it’s a sign of the times.
“The neighboring states,” he said. “New York, now, the governor has said he’s bound and determined to move forward with this. I think New Jersey, the legislature is dealing with the issue right now. So I’m just trying to be a realist.”
Wolf said he’s not planning any concrete action, though. Right now, he’s just keeping an eye on other states.
Any effort to legalize recreational marijuana would have to go through the House and Senate. The Republican majorities in both chambers have long been against the idea.
