Investigation into Lancaster County Sheriff expected to start soon

(Harrisburg) — The Lancaster County sheriff has been on paid leave for nearly a year, and now state lawmakers are trying to resolve the situation.

Sheriff Mark Reese is accused of trying to force one of his female deputies into a relationship, and sending her pornographic emails.

When the allegations surfaced last summer, he was placed on paid leave, which remains his status at this point.

In that span he’s collected more than $90,000 in salary and benefits.

But lawmakers are now getting involved.

The House recently approved a measure from Republican Representative Bryan Cutler of Lancaster County to form a special committee to take action.

“This is the path that we have constitutionally available. The easiest path though would be quite frankly to have resolution to the situation and perhaps a resignation. Absent that, we’ll continue to pursue impeachment,” says Cutler. “It will most likely take months. When you look at the historical perspective, we have not done this in its entirety since the mid-90s.”

Cutler says the Senate could also try to directly remove Reese from office.
