(Hollidaysburg) — Midstate Congressman Bill Shuster plans tol seek re-election to Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District seat in Washington, D.C.

Shuster, R-Hollidaysburg, was elected to the seat in 2001 after his father Bud Shuster retired. Like his father had done, Bill Shuster chairs the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

“I am proud to represent central and southwestern Pennsylvania in Congress, and I am seeking re-election to continue implementing a conservative agenda that cuts spending and reduces the size of government,” Shuster said. “For the past eight years, I have been playing defense against the Obama administration. I’ve voted over 60 times to dismantle Obamacare, and I have rejected every attempt by the president to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. I’m tired of defense, and I want to be there when we elect a Republican president so we can strengthen and restore the beliefs and principles that make this nation great.”

Shuster faces a challenge in the GOP primary from retired Coast Guard Capt. Art Halvorson of Manns Choice, Bedford County. Halvorson ran against Shuster in 2014. Both Shuster and Halvorson made overtures to conservative voters in their campaigns.

Shuster said on Monday that he has passed legislation through the House to stop the job-killing EPA Waters of the United States Rule.

He has backed major transportation bills, including the long-term highway bill Fast Act, signed into law in 2015. Shuster said the FAST Act provides an increase of nearly $800 million for Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges without raising  taxes or adding to the deficit.

“While President Obama has tried his best to transform America into a government dependent nation, I have still been able to put forth a conservative vision that ensures Congress listens to the people,” Shuster said. “I am also currently working on an FAA reauthorization bill that puts conservative principles into action by taking over 30,000 employees off the government payroll.”

In the previous Congress he authored the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA), a waterways infrastructure bill that deauthorized billions in spending and contained no earmarks.

“It is my greatest honor to serve a region that I have had the opportunity to spend my life and raise a family in” Shuster said, “and I am asking for the people of the 9th Congressional District’s support in 2016.”

The 9th District includes Franlin And Fulton counties.
