MADD drives home holiday message
(Undated) — Mothers Against Drunk Driving is urging motorists to “Tie One On For Safety” this holiday season.
The red ribbons they want drivers to tie to their vehicles will serve as reminders to designate a non-drinking driver before leaving home.
MADD President Jan Withers says a new survey indicates nearly three in four adults have witnessed someone try to drive home after having too much to drink.
“They were asked several different things that they thought they had done over the time, and the most common thing that people did was drive the person home themselves,” she explains. “And another one right up there at the top was take the keys from the person and help them find an alternative way home.”
But, nearly one in five respondents did nothing to stop the impaired person from driving.
Withers calls it an opportunity to save a life.
She recommends intervening in pairs, speaking slowly and being as non-confrontational as possible.
