Hearing on drug use planned for Thursday
(Harrisburg) — A legislative hearing scheduled for next Thursday aims to examine how law enforcement handles drug users in the commonwealth.
It will be held in Harrisburg and comes after the state House judiciary committee heard testimony in both western and eastern parts of the state.
Doctor Richard DiMonte treats addiction and says lawmakers, district attorneys, and law enforcement need to change their way of thinking.
“It has to be changed, there has to be more access to drug court. A lot of these crimes are committed due to people’s addictions and that’s not being addressed. They’re being thrown in prison and they figure if they keep incarcerating them, these people are going to get better. They’re not going to get better. They need proper treatment.”
But some argue those who committ a crime should face proper punishment.
The hearing is open to the public and will be held at the Harrisburg High School, starting at 10 AM Thursday.
