York Hospital unveils plans for new emergency department

(York) — A midstate hospital will break ground on a new emergency department next summer.
WellSpan York Hospital is planning to launch the $50-million project in August.
Subsequent construction and renovation work in the area of the existing emergency department will take about three years.
Hospital President Keith Noll says the work will be done in phases.
“The first thing that we’re going to look at doing is trying to do the new areas so that we can actually expand the footprint, move into those areas and then renovate the back-end of the house — or the existing area — so that we don’t diminish capacity to a great extent,” he explains.
Noll says the new facility was designed to enhance the hospital’s patient care model. He believes the improved efficiency will ultimately lower the cost of care.
When York Hospital’s existing emergency department was built in 1994, it was treating about 35,000 patients annually. Today, that figure is more than 78,000 patients a year.
