Caterpillar to stay in York County

(Undated) — Heavy-equipment manufacturer Caterpillar is maintaining its presence in York County.
For 60 years, the Illinois-based company has had a presence in the York area. But, Caterpillar had been contemplating whether or not it should close a 1.1 million-square-foot distribution center in Springettsbury Township.
Now, its says it will purchase and modernize the facility, which it has been leasing, and keep its nearly 200 workers.
“We are excited the decision was made to invest in the existing facility,” said Facility Manager Jim Paprocki in a statement. “We have a very talented and committed group of employees here, and are anxious to get started on the work ahead.”
When all is said and done, the York Distribution Center will have a total of six million-square-feet of new and renovated warehouse space.
“We were pleased to work with Caterpillar to help secure the decision by the company to reinvest in York,” said Governor Tom Corbett. “After calling York home for 60 years, (this) marks an important step in the next chapter of Caterpillar’s presence in the region.”
The company has opened four new distribution facilities in the U-S and similar centers in Mexico, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates in the past few years.
In 1998, Caterpillar closed its manufacturing operation in Springettsbury Township, cutting more than 1,000 jobs.
