“Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

The first sentence of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address — perhaps the most iconic speech in American history.

It also is probably the most memorized and recited speech by America’s school children and probably has been since Lincoln delivered them 150 years ago.

For most students, reciting the Gettysburg Address is just one part of history class.

But not for the boys at the Greenwood School in Putney, Vermont.  There, the students who all have complex learning differences memorize Lincoln’s words and use them for much more than history.

It’s the subject of filmmaker Ken Burn’s latest project, “The Address.”

Burns appears on Wednesday’s Smart Talk to discuss The Address.

The Address will air on WITF-TV Tuesday, April 15 at 9 p.m.

Watch a trailer for The Address here.

Ken Burns and PBS are challenging everyone across the country, especially students, to create a video of themselves reading or reciting the Gettysburg Address. Join the project by sharing your Gettysburg Address at learntheaddress.org.

The WITF staff and Board members created three videos of themselves reading or reciting the Gettysburg Address:  Staff 1      Staff 2      Board Members

Also on Wednesday’s program, Allyson Schwartz, a Democrat running for governor of Pennsylvania will join us to discuss issues important to voters.

Schwartz is currently a member of Congress, representing the Philadelphia suburbs and a former state senator.
