“Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
So began President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. One-hundred-fifty years later to the day, Smart Talk broadcast live from Gettysburg.
On Tuesday’s program, we’ll discuss what Lincoln was trying to do with what he called “a few brief remarks,” dissect the speech line-by-line, and focus on what Lincoln’s words became immortal in American history.
Appearing on the program will be Dr. Drew Gilpin Faust, the president of Harvard University and the author of several books on the Civil War era, including This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War and National Parks Service Ranger Troy Harman.
Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns will be a special guest to discuss his latest project: The Address. The film zeroes in on the Gettysburg Address and will feature famous people and ordinary Americans reciting Lincoln’s iconic speech. The film will air on PBS in April 2014.
